Whangahu visit

Easy / medium – walks & peaks

A easy tramp in & spend the Saturday / Sunday visiting the peaks on this side of the mountain & check out some potential ice climbs – we will be staying in the Whangahu hut on the Saturday night. 4 wheel drives could be needed / alternative, is along walk from the gate.

28 & 29 June

Mitre Peak (Ringatoto)

Medium / hard – exposure & endurance

Friday night into Rangipo hut (a Doc hut on around the mountain), Saturday visit the summit of Ringatoto, then drop down onto Wahianoa glacier to the around the mountain track back to the hut, out Sunday – can check out alternatives before retreating Sunday.

5 & 6 July

Instructor training

Auckland & CNI instructors combine to update on all those technical bits.

Venue – Bivouac Outdoor Victoria Street, Hamilton. A Gear talk from John their new manager. The shop will be open so grab an opportunity to bag a bargain for the winter season ahead. All welcome watch out for an update in the next CNI Newsletter.

Weekend One for participants – commences Friday evening at the Parks Backpackers, National Park, then we base ourselves at Delta Ridge for the Saturday & Sunday.

All NZAC – CNI members welcome to join with Sno-craft group for a visit to the Plateau & surround peaks.

26 & 27 July

Northern Circuit

Easy / Medium

A two day trip – Friday night into Mangatapopo hut, Saturday up onto Ngauruhoe via Pukekakiora saddle. We will then follow the creek to Wahohonu Springs, cross the springs and over to Outrere hut for the night. On Sunday we will make our way to Emerald lakes via Outrere Valley up to Red Crater then across to the summit of Tongariro. Follow the ridge line down to Mangatapopo and out to the road end. Most of this will be off track.

Saturday afternoon & Sunday – A hands on look (not to close I hope) at the theory & reality of avalanches, the bits you need to know to save yourself & others.

Weather watchers be warned – These trips are a goer each & every weekend unless weather and conditions are too bad (i.e. 150km/hr winds, 1 in 100 year rain event, vehicle & foot access to the mountain is cut off, or the avalanche warning is extremely extreme). 

Alternatives & other trips – On the first available wet crappy weekend, we have the Worlds Worst Tramp – We will keep you posted. Also at the end of the list is a list of other options that may excite you or alternatively some good climbs that we have missed out and you would like to go on– let us know so we can plan them in & make it happen.

Land owners can remove access (Smiths), so for all of us -
leave the area as you found it or better:
no litter or poo!!
be considerate about parking, see car pooling
be
quiet passing homes,
ensure all
gates are left as you find them; one open gate can cause $$$$ of damage if stock gets out, so be extra vigilant.
